Not definitive, but: Checking it cold will always ensure "all" the oil is in the sump. This is a lot more reproducible than checking while warm, since you don't know home much has drained back into t

Your oil dipstick is a pretty simple creature. It runs from midway down the block and just sort of pokes into the sump. What it's measuring is the oil level in the sump; from this it should be clear
