I'm not sure if this is the right tool for the job... Basically I have an old Ford pickup, where a large metal plate is bolted on the bumper as a drop-hitch of sorts, with L-bracket supports going up

the grinder will do the job but there are better tools... I'm assuming you don't have a torch (oxy-Act). That would be the quickest way to remove it... generally side grinders are made to be used on

A couple things in addition to that good info... You can buy metal cut-off discs that work in an angle grinder. For what you described, these are ideal. Just cut the thing off, then use the grinder

Along with all the other comments, I'll through in my 2 1. If you use a wire wheel on the grinder, be sure you get one of the "knotted" types rated to 10,000 rpm. 2. As someone else said about safety

I use both on occasion, and I have to say I disagree with Tim. The big advantages of the air grinder are that it's small and light, hence easier to maneuver in tight quarters. But the HF 4" grinder

$45 sounds like a good deal.... given your limited use it will last for years... if it only last 5 years it only cost you $9 a year... If you were running a fab shop... I'd say buy industrial grade..

I am going to add some personal comments Get a grinder with a standard threaded arbor (SAE threads). Do not buy a 4" grinder if you can get a 4.5" grinder. A 5" grinder is better yet. A paddle switch

A hearty ditto to nearly every comment! 1. Disk grinders are second only to drills in useful utility. 2. Own a good grinder for heavy use but the $5.95 cheapies do a reasonable job for normal usage.
