One possibility is a clogged radiator, causing the water pump to pull a vacuum on the inlet side and suck air through the seal. Not likely, but ... Another possibility is air trapped in the system.

On one of my non-British cars I had a similar symptom. Was able to diagnose by connecting my air compressor to each spark plug opening (using the hose from my compression tester) and pumping up each
