But what is confusing me is that unless the spring is going bad, the piston ought to remain at the same level while at a constant speed. Since my dashpots go through half of their oil in about a week

Hi Charles, Since the piston is part of a "closed loop" feedback system, it will hunt or flutter around it's balance or set point. In this steady state mode, the dashpot works to filter out this hunt

My understanding is that with a heavier oil the piston rises more slowly such that the venturi opening is smaller in ratio to the throttle plate opening than it would be with lighter oil. The smalle

About losing oil. Perhaps they are being over filled and they are just going to the correct level during use. The illustrations I have of the HS2 carbs show the oil level about 1/2" or more down from

But I don't overfill them (I think). The service guides recommend topping up the dashpots regularly, so the oil must go somewhere on all SU equipped engines. When the level gets too low in mine, I ha

On my stromberg, there's a small O ring at the bottom of the piston, above where the needle sits that went bad. It leaked until I installed a new one, which I got one from Joe Curto in Queens. Charle

It seeps around the piston oil tube and down into the little moat inside the piston where it drains out through the piston vacuum chamber holes at the rear bottom corner of the piston. From there it
