I have a few questions about some of the electrical components on spridgets: 1) What is the expected lifetime of a Lucas distributor? In the Vizard book he mentions that the bearings wear out quickly

I sell a gear drive solenoid starter for the Spridgets for high compression engines or for those that don't care to have their ring gear chewed up with the inertia drive lucas starter. In stock now.

Are these direct replacement starters and what's the cost? Guess the time to go with one of your units is when I replace the starter ring... right after I have Dave at APT lighten my flywheel. WFO H

1) What's "quickly"? The Lucas distributor in my '73 Midget was in the car when I rescued it from death in 1987. Since then, it has done 40,000 miles and exhibits nary a wobble in the shaft. Occasio

Do Lucas inertia starters, by their very nature , tend to chew up ring gears? They are spinning prior to engagement aren't they? Was this a case of engineering down to a cost?

This is as much of a product of the times as it was a cost savings program. The starter is under full speed and load ability when the pinion hits the ring gear. Ouch. On top of that, the engine alway

Spinning? Well, yes and no. If everything is working correctly (i.e. pinion is free on its spiral splines) the shaft of the starter is spinning fast. However that rotation is working mainly to throw

Paul, Please elaborate for the engineeringly challanged like me that can't figure out why an engine turning 1000 rpms or more would always stop in the same place. TIA Robert Houston

Hi Robert, When you turn of the ignition the engine is usually rotating at its idle speed of about a 1000 rpms, but then it starts to come to rest. It stops pretty quickly because as it continues to
