- I've been told that to test the timing chain, you put a timing light on, run the engine to 2500-3000 rpm and if the mark doesn't jump all over the place, the chain is ok. Mike Blonder Elmhurst, IL 6

- on, run place, depends on whether the car's distributor and ignition system are ok, if you have a car with a distributor that occasionally misses the #1 cyl. due to the rotor/cap going out, it isn't
