When I recovered my 73 seats (1973, that is) there was a piece of spring steel in the tube in the seat back that pressed on to the shaft on the head restraint, presumably so it says where put. As I c

Stand with one foot on each side of the seat in question. Grasp the headrest VERY firmly. Pull, tug, curse, wiggle form side to side, do it all over again until the -- thing flies loose and you fall

This is the method. You might try a little machine oil/wd40 or something down the post before you try it. As a side note, this method is a bit&$ in a GT. Ask me how I know..... Harlan.
