Did you find the engine block ground? A braided cable straddling the driver side (US) front engine mount. If not hooked up the engine (and alternator, starter, etc) is isolated by the rubber mounts.

I don't remember how your problem started but try taking off the air cleaner. If it is clogged then the car won't start. A clogged filter will also cause the car to die right out while driving it. ..
