A friend and I had an interesting experience once while towing his old Mustang with the drive shaft connected. The trans caught fire. I guess that supports the lubrication theory.

My brother had a fun time towing his datsun. he got it on the dolly left it in first gear and around 60 Mph the motor froze up then he took off the drive shaft.
