Peter-Although I have never experienced "spline lock", I can answer the last
2 questions. The axle shafts have to be able change lengths to accommodate
suspension movement, just as the drive shaft does on cars with a live axle.
If the splines are seized from lack of lubrication, crud, or rust, this
movement is impaired. The remedy-disassemble, clean, lubricate, and make
sure the rubber boot is in good condition. I usually do this about every 2
years. Berry
