Marc---Been out of town, so this response to your engine ailment may
come in late. None-the-less, I'll pass on what I can, in case your
problem still exists and you need another theory.

First, it might help to put a vacuum gauge in the intake manifold, to
monitor its reading as you accelerate the engine. Without going thru all
of the symptoms of a fluctuating needle, note that most gauges come with
instructions on how an engine should "read" at idle and thru thr rpm
band. It will provide clues as to where the fault might lie, should the
needle not hold true.

On the B1AW needles, you'll find them to be slightly richer just off
idle, and quite a bit richer past the halfway point of their taper. A
little richer might compliment your other engine mods, but I wouldn't
hold too much hope for it curing your problem. Such needles are
available from Burlen Fuel Systems, in England. (I would first check
with them to be sure they are the adjustable kind and will be a direct
replacement for the stock BIAF.

It sort of sounds as if unmetered air is entering the engine, after you
open the throttle plates. (This should show up in the vacuum gauge test)
Once past 3000 rpm, such air is less noticeable, as more fuel and rpm
will mask this.

Another question here. Can you hear or feel the misfire when
accelerating the engine while operating the throttle by hand? You may
have to listen close to the distributor cap, for arcing.

I'm interested in what you find.
