Wear in Sliding Splines

I have my axles out, trying to get to a clunk from the rear. The U-Js
seem tight, but the sliding splines are pretty loose - I can twist them
back and forth and here a definite click. I'm thinking this is the
problem.

But I took the axles into the closest triumph shop today because I need
the hub end float adjusted and don't have the tools. They said well,
some play in the sliding splines is expected, but didn't really give me
much idea about how much is "normal". "You should've brought the car in
then we could look at the whole drive train and diagnose it properly".
Which is true, except that I really didn't want to drive the 6 150 miles
and wait for however long it takes to diagnose things, order parts and
put it all back together then drive home (I mean we're talking days...)

I checked the differential by twisting the drive shaft (which seems
tight and smooth) and then grasping the two axle flanges and wiggling
them - some small amount of play there also. The diff mounts look OK,
best I can see. It's tough to see the rear mounts...

So my question, is play in the sliding splines something I should
ignore and look for something more?
