Hi Mike,

I have run a 6 for a year with the Crane XR3000 ignition control and the
Crane high energy coil. You can see a photo of it at:

http://topshamautoparts.com/tr6/engine.htm

The control was mounted vertically to the inner fender near the fuse box.
The coil mounted to an aluminum plate fastened to the same mounting bosses
that held the original coil. Wires were NAPA Belden high performance. This
summer it was removed as part of my electronic fuel injection conversion.

A note of caution that wasn't discovered until the changeover; the new
distributorless ignition was such a marked improvement that I retrieved the
old cap to see if plug wires were somehow crossed! The firing order was
correct but looking the cap over revealed the inside center post quite badly
burned away.

I'm not sure if the Crane coil was just too much for the smallish cap
allowing the spark to jump around. Most high energy distributor caps are
nearly twice the diameter of the TR6. The larger diameter caps insulate each
post better by larger air gaps. Perhaps some of the list experts will know
more about it. On the other hand the cap was a couple of years old
beforehand . . .

You should be quite happy with the Crane ignition but keep an eye on the cap
and rotor button condition. I'm pretty sure the coil mounting plate is here
somewhere. It's yours if you want it, just give me a mailing address. The
old Crane system is about to be fitted to a VW ice racer!
