I completely understand the engineering side of this now.  OK, for a poll:
how many have ignored good engineering practice and replaced the $8.00 chain
alone?

Just my two bits worth, but don't do it.

Even though the sprockets "look" fine, they will have worn to match the
pitch of the old chain.  Putting a new chain on them will simply result in
that chain wearing prematurely to the pitch of the old sprockets.  Good
engineering practice on any roller chain drive, which is what the cam drive
is, is to always replace sprockets and chain together so they can wear in to
each other for long life.
