No wizard am I, but I just went through this and ended up drilling some 
small holes in the seal and putting some screws in to serve as anchor 
points to tap it out. It was still a pain in the @%$#. Also, you will 
want to research the collapsible versus solid spacer issue and the 
effects on pinion bearing preload. I sort of winged it and returned the 
pinion nut to the same position it was in. I also checked backlash to 
ensure that it didn't change, but I wouldn't recommend this course of 
action to anyone. I will let you know in a few years how it worked out 
(or sooner if it didn't!)
