Al---Not being able to go directly into the chosen gear is not just a
quirk of the Toyota. The TR tranny is prone to this also, at times. One
reason for this is when the clutch doesn't fully disengage.
Don't know for sure what mechanically hangs up, but know that shutting
off the engine isn't always necessary. Try shifting into any gear you
can get into, let out the clutch a tad, enough to move the car, and then
shift into the one you originally selected. Is it mostly reverse?
If this reluctance for the transmission to shift into gear isn't clutch
related, perhaps others adept at transmission internals may be able to
explain this. I'll bet Herman could!
