Adam,

Don't need a spring compressor for the rear.  Make
sure the e-brake is not set.  You must turn the axles
in order for the trailing arm to drop fully.  This
should be enough to get the springs out.

I went through this little battle once.  Then I
decided to look at the Bentley book.  Couldn't figure
out why it said to release the e-brake....
