There is nothing in particular that holds these parts in place
during installation and removal, which is why they always seem to be
missing.
Use wheel bearing grease to get everything sticky, then put the
spring in, followed by the plunger. Carefully insert the shifter into
the gearbox and install the retainer. If the spring and plunger pop out
during the install, start over.
About the third try, remind yourself that this is one reason why
British Leyland went out of business.

Subject: Anti-vibration plunger and plunger loading spring
I noticed that my gear box shift lever was missing the anti-vibration
plunger (TRF part # 112424) and plunger loading
spring (TRF part # 137988). I ordered the parts and have them now, but
am wondering how to install them. Clearly the
spring goes into the small hole at the end of the shift lever and the
plunger somehow attaches to the end of the spring,
but how do all the parts stay together? In other words, how do you
install these two little things?
