battery blowout- no Alpine content

    Any guesses as to why my car battery exploded yesterday when I
turned the ignition key . It left a nice inverted dent in my hood.
   The battery is nearly 5 years old, used everyday for about 150 miles,
was very clean around the terminals but had never been checked for fluid
level. I didn't notice you could until the cap blew off it. Voltage at
3000 rpms is 14.4 on the new battery.
    I'll remember not to stand over the battery when someone else starts
the car in the future.
