Piners,

Yesterday I tried to remove the thermostat housing from an alpine head.

I bought the head some time back off of ebay.
The previous owner had tried to remove it, and gave up.

Since the housing was allready bent from whatever the previous owner had done
to it, I figured I could do no worse.

I could not uncrew a few of the studs that held it to the head, beleive me I
tried everything in my arsenal.

Ended up breaking the housing into pieces just to get it off "to preserve the
head".

Decided to do a post-mortem.
With the cover in pieces, put one of the studs in a vice, and still could not
turn it in the housing.

I ended up putting a torch to the housing, where the stud went through, and
after about 5 minutes
fire began to spray out of the ends of the housing where the stud passed
through, and the stud fell out on its own weight.

It turns out that the studs had seeped oil past them, and it hardened like a
rock to the housing.

It took a whole lot of heat, but at some magic temperature, it loosened up.

Hope this helps somebody...
