I just received my August issue of SportsCar and note on page F-174 that
the Solo Events Board has proposed a rule allowing reverse gear to be
removed from Formula Cars and Sports Racers.
A couple of months ago this was discussed in a lively thread on the C
Modified email list. The overwhelming majority of the list stated that
although the rule might make sense for those in B Modified (the class
the author of the rule competes in), it was a poor rule for C Modified.
Briefly stated, competitors in CMod believe that it serves no purpose to
remove reverse gear from Formula Fords and Sports 2000s, and they are
concerned about any unintended consequences of allowing reverse to be
removed. This was made clear to Colan Arnold who participated in the
thread and who contacted some of us directly (although he did not
respond to responses sent to him).
I wish to reiterate that this rule is not proper for C Modified.
Although it is always more "clean" for rules writers to make a rule
apply to an entire category rather than just some classes of a category,
in this case C Modified must be left out of this proposed rule.
