Ok, so not much autox context, execpt that the truck described below is used
for towing when forced to.

Problem:

1986 Ford Ranger w/2.9l and AT

Went out for lunch and started the truck - very rough idle and will not rev
at all. Gas has to be feathered to gain ANY revs, but usually tries to die
with any touch of the accellerator.

Had towed to house (AAA Plus was worth the extra $20 for the miles!)

Start up, exhaust is basically pulsing, and smelling like gas (put hand over
exhaust, smell hand.)
If left running long enough (if it will do that) gas drips out of cat
/y-pipe connector.

So, I'm stumped so far - checking manual but nothing specific.

Undoing each sparkplug wire does cause it to run slower (or die). Replaced
cap and rotor anway (since it was needed.)

Why would so much fuel not be getting burned? cylinder w/o compression
maybe? Timing? fuel pressure too high?

I'm open to any suggestions before I give up and take it to a shop.

Thanks in adavance!

Happy that I haven't sold the Miata yet!
