Funny you should ask. I had a clarification from the SEB last year on
this very topic. You can duct air to your engine intake in any manner
provided that you do not alter the factory bodywork in any way. If you
need to bend or cut a piece of metal/plastic in order for your duct to
fit, then it's not legal. I wrote the letter regarding an idea I had for
intakes on my 914 that would effectively be scoops over the engine lid
(metal mesh). Bolting only to the factory ski rack mounting points, and
not altering the bodywork or engine lid in any way. It was deemed legal.
This can also apply to running a duct from to the air intake from under
the front bumper. So long as factory body work is unaltered in any way,
you're probably ok.
As for books? I guess a few Evil Empire bookstores might carry 'em. But
you could probably save a little money by ordering your directly from
