Be forewarned -- In south Topeka there is a major road construction project
going on that can really be a PITA between Forbes Field and the ExpoCentre.
They have ripped up all of, and have put down about half of, the whole
interchange that brings together the south end of I-470, the South Topeka
exit of the Kansas Turnpike, and Topeka Blvd.
I don't know what to tell you if you are coming from the east or the south
on the Turnpike.
But if you are coming from the west on I-70, or staying at the motel cluster
up on Wanamaker off I-470, here's the tip for getting to Forbes:
Go down I-470 and get off at Exit 5, which is the US-75 exit. (The "last
free exit" onto Topeka Blvd. is Exit 6). The exit splits, keep right, and
you end up on US-75 which at that point is still a divided, limited access
highway. Leave US-75 at the first exit, then turn left which takes you into
the little town of Pauline. The stoplight, just over the tracks, is Topeka
Blvd., right there at John's General Store. Forbes is a mile or so south.
Going the other way, turn left at John's, get back to US-75, and keep left
at the highway split to end up on I-470 again.
Even when the construction is done, it is still a good route to avoid a
couple of miles of city traffic.
