Bob,

  Mine was shot on 887.  So when I had the new exhaust system installed, we
omitted it.  The only side effect will be some problem with cold weather 
driving.  Fortunately, we don't get that cold around here, and I haven't
finished my car, so I haven't driven it to comment on the problems or lack
there of by omitting the heat raiser.
