    (1)  Does anyone have ideas on what to make a catalytic heat shield
         out of?  Coffee cans and asbestos are hard to come by these days...
         Should I mount the heat shield on the starter or converter?

I don't know if this would be appropriate, but note that there's this
heat insulating wrap on the market that's sold for wrapping headers and
the like with to keep underhood temperatures down and to aid combustion
and scavenging (they claim) by keeping heat in the exhaust gasses for
longer.  The stuff is a cloth-like tape that you wrap around whatever
hot header pipes or manifolds that you want to insulate.  Look for it
in ads in racing magazines and the like (I've certainly seen it in the
regional and national SCCA pulications).  The problem with a cat converter
may be that it might raise the temperature of the converter too much
(eliminate air cooling of it) and thus roast the puppy.
