I didn't want to leave you all hanging so here's the end result of my
battery saga. The strap that runs from one battery to the other had
worn through its insulation and was grounding against the differential
during negative acceleration. Upon further inspection, it appeared that
the cable should have been run through the holes running between the
battery bins just over the driveshaft.

But that doesn't matter now because I have a single 12V battery and a
little extra storage compartment. The groundstrap was real easy to
move, I didn't even have to drill a new hole, there was already one
there. I highly recommend the switch if anyone out there still runs
with 2 6V batteries, it's more economical and very easy to install the
12V. It looked like the ground strap might have been long enough to
reach the new battery without moving the strap, for those in a hurry.
But anyone with a pair of 1/2" sockets can do the switch in just a few
minutes.

So yesterday was my first honest-to-goodness, remove-the-top-and-stow-it
in-the-boot, drive-to-work-and-leave-the-roof-down-all-day experience.
What a blast!
