There are many reasons not to engage the OD in first gear. The torque
problem has already been mentioned, the other big reason is that the OD is
operated by a hydrolic pump that is turned by the main shaft, in first gear
the shaft typically will not have enough rpms to fully engage the OD (causing
terrible wear on the OD clutch). The OD clutch is very expensive to replace
if you can even find one.

I use DISOL parts cleaning fluid from Standard Oil Co., it is available from
any Standard Oil Distributor, check the Yellow Pages. You can also have an
auto parts store order solvent in bulk for you. I am currently able to buy
solvent from a local farm supply store. The parts solvents are much less
volitale than Kerosene or paint thinner and won't eat rubber nearly as fast.

Changing the shocks on a TR4 should not require a spring compressor. Jack
the front end up and remove the wheels, then carefully lower the front
suspension onto jack stands or blocks, this will compress the springs so you
can remove the shocks and replace them. The recomended spring compressor for
the TR's is a 3/4" threaded rod, passed up through the center of the spring.
(you have to remove the shocks first) You will need to make a steel plate
that fits over the bottom shock mounts. The spring is them easily and safely
compressed by tightening the nuts on the rod.
