I believe that "SS" stood for "Swallow Sidecars". Motorcycle sidecars were
their first product.
After 1939 a small global event took place, which interrupted civilian
motorcar production for five years or so. After this event, the initials "SS"
seemed inappropriate for a company trying to sell anything to anybody. So they
changed it to "Jaguar".
