I had the same problem and solved without removing the axle, and it is
cheaper than buying a $22 socket !!!!
Try the following:
If you do not already have a set of VERY sharp drill bits, get a set
now before you start.
- Remove the wheel, brake drum, and shoes.
- Centre punch the brake adjuster, from the outside (ie the part you see
when you remove the drum.
- Get a small drill bit and start drilling into the brake adjuster,
until the hole goes past the treaded part holding it in.
- Get the next size drill and repeat the process.
- Keep doing this until you have almost drilled out the adjuster.
- Now get a propane torch and heat the area.
- Get you brake adjuster tool and try to free the brake adjuster.
This method owrked for me on both sides. In reflection, I should have bought
a screw extracter and tried that first. But hey it worked
(BTW - I had to throw the drill bits away after, they were too dull to
be of any use !!!)
