Reply to: The "Tractor Engine"
It's my understanding that the Triumph 4 cylinder engine was developed during
WWII, for use in the desert campaign. That would explain its "Industrial
Strength" construction, with wet sleeves, extra large sump, etc. The engine
was meant to keep on running with large clearances caused by sand-scoring and
heavy use.
As a tribute to Triumph engineering, let me say that when I bought the
Clankster, it had:
* a blown head gasket, leaking combustion gases into the water system
* three broken piston rings.
* Trashed main and rod bearings
* Valve springs so weak, that you could open the valves with the palm of
your hand....
.....And it ran great!
