While you may likely have poorly set up carbs, What about the distributer
settings & condition? Those are the simple bits- What about the valve
adjustments? And do you have any idea what condition the cam is in?
Compression? I see a lot of people about with the carbs, when the rest
of the engine isn't up to snuff.

On the other hand, you may need some carb work. :-)
