(or checked for balance).  Any 4WD/off-road establishment should be able to
do this for $25-$40.

My tuppence worth: Another and even more extremely important consideration with
U-joints is phase angle. The standard Hooke joint is NOT a constant velocity
joint. The driveshaft does not turn at constant angular velocity even when the
trans and diff are. You have to have the driveshaft yokes parallel to each
other, not rotated at some angle. They usually have alignment marks. To check
this, remove the U-joints, run a round bar or deepwell socket thru each yoke,
and support the bars on flat square blocks or deep wells on a flat table. There
should be almost no rocking with this setup.
The trans output shaft and diff pinion shaft should be parallel to each other
as well. Carelessness and/or ignorance in this area is the reason some 4
wheelers and drag racers go through a lot of u-joints.
