Hello Scott
Just before you connect the pipe straight from the rocker cover to the carbs
you may wish to consider some kind of flame trap type filter. This is for the
reason you first pointed out - stoping internal fire. The Rover V8 has the
later type system (system 2) with a flame trap (wire filled canister) screwed
into the rocker cover and teed pipe going to ports between the bridge and the
throttle plates on the SUs. The circuit is completed by a pipe from the other
rocker cover through fuel type filter to the air cleaner.

My corolla is different again. It has a PCV valve connected to the rocker
cover which feeds to a port just beneath the single downdraught carb. That
is it is connected to the inlet manifold. The circuit is completed by a pipe
running from the air cleaner (inside the element) to the rocker cover. This
pipe has a flame trap type (wire filled canister) filter inside it supposedly
to stop large particle getting into the carburettor in cases of excessive blow
by. It also means you get a nice pooling of oil in the air filter. This
inline flame trap is about 3/8" and costs about AUS$20 from toyota if you're
interested.
