Thanks Jeff,

I had a new throw-out bearing put in with the new clutch and,
having all of the interior out of the car, I can definitely tell
that the noise is coming from the transmission, not the throw-out
bearing. The noise is there in neutral, first, second and third gear,
not in fourth and reverse. Not knowing enough about the layout of the
gears in that transmission, I don't think I can diagnose which gear
or bearing(s) the noise is coming from.
After a long bout with shipwright's disease, I finally decided to take
the car to a shop (British Car Specialists in Oakland), and have them
do the work I had peen putting off doing for so long, so I don't really
have the time to research it too much.
After I posted my original, frantic note to the net last week, I found
several options to the $950 quote I had been given. TRF will ship you
a rebuilt transmission for $850 plus a $200 refundable core charge.
Victoria British sells a rebuilt transmission for less than $600 plus
$150 core charge. I also managed to find a local outfit who would take
my transmission apart for $75 and they would tell me exactly what parts
needed to be replaced. I would have to pay for the parts plus an
additional $75 to have it all put back together again. Not a bad deal!
I found a guy who will sell me an overdrive transmission, complete with
a J-type overdrive and all the necessary hardware, all for $500. I have
always wanted to have an overdrive transmission in the car, so I jumped
on the deal. The transmission and overdrive are 'as-is', but are
believed to be good. If not, I can always have them rebuilt for $150
plus parts. The only problem with the deal is that the guy is busy, and
couldn't promise exactly when he could get the unit out of the car it's
in. I hope to have it by the end of this week, though. I'm not in too much
of a hurry, but my mechanic may get impatient.

Anyway, thanks again for the offer,
