Adrian Jefferies inquired, "Which makes me ask - what is the consensus on
whether to declutch on shifting the o/d in or out?" I never declutched when
shifting my O/D. I obeyed the instructions in the Spitfire manual about
shifting in and out of O/D with the tranny I put in my Midget 1500. That meant
never shifting out of O/D when the tach needle was in the yellow--no other
cautions. I changed the oil and cleaned the filter frequently, but never
noticed any shiny bits in the oil or much fur on the magnetic drain plug. The
O/D provided years of faultless service and always shifted instantaneously.
That tranny with the J-type O/D was the best $225 I spent on that car. I wish
I
could find a similar deal on an O/D tranny for my Spitfire Mk. 1!
