Acceptable wear limits for wire wheels?

I noticed some wear on the splines in my hubs and wheels on the Midget.  
How can I tell whether the wear is within acceptable limits?  I doubt I 
will have $$$$ for new wheels and hubs until the end of the summer <frown>
