Gas Fumes

Greetings,

I have a '73 MGB-GT and everytime I fill my gas tank,
I get allot of gas fumes in my car. The filler pipe
(under my back deck) seems to be in good shape, so
I am unsure where the fumes are originating.

Also, in the rear, passenger side, corner there is
some sort of canister assembly. Does anyone know what
this is?
