I did get a knowledgable reply from someone on the fordnatics lists.
Seems there's a guy in Nor-Cal SAAC who drives an older MB and who is
building an ERA GT-40 replica.  He (the list member) speculated that
the MB owner plans to transfer the plates to the replica when it's
completed.  Apparently the kit is coming along quite nicely.

Interesting; I wasn't aware you could transfer vanity plates in
California.
