Just read about Greg adding megalights to his car. Besides the wiring, the
other weak point I have encountered is the alternator. The Lucas unit on
MGBs puts out all of 36 amps if all the electrons are flowing in the same
direction and it's a good day (and the phase of the moon...etc). This
equates to 432 watts. (p = ei where p is power, i is current, and e is
volts). Anyway, lets see what happens to the 36 amps during normal
operation of the car. The headlights draw about 10 amps on highbeam, other
running lights 4-6 (??), wiper motor (assume 2-3), heater motor (assume 2-3)
and radio (assume 4) - total of 26 amps when everything is on. This leaves
10 amps to keep the battery charged or to run other equipment - not much.
This was the basis for my question on replacing the Lucas alternator with an
American unit that would have a higher current capability.
Hope this adds a little light on the subject.
