Since clutches are the latest topic, please concentrate your minds on this
symptom: (on a TR4A -diaphragm clutch)
When cold the clutch works great, but as soon as the engine gets warm the
action becomes "notchy", making it impossible to bring the clutch up smoothly.
By the time the engine is hot the clutch is in almost binary on off mode,
making driving in traffic hard work on both me and the drivetrain. This notchy
feel is like the release bearing carrier is sticking the gearbox nosepiece,
but this is well greased. The oddest point is that all the above only applies
with the engine turning. Turn the ignition off and the clutch is smooth again.
With the engine running and the clutch depressed, turning the engine off gives
one last notchy upward movement, and then its smooth again.

Speaking to UK specialists, they suggest replacing all clutch components:
Cover plate, driven plate, release bearing and carrier. I have replaced all
these in the last 5000 miles (although not at the same time).

I dont think its the slave cylinder (engine turning should make no odds), maybe
the driven plate sticks on the spline...

If anyone has a definate answer I will test the hypothesis ASAP.

This is a common problem on TR 4A,5,6 which is sometimes cured by replacing
the cover and driven plate but not always.....

Yours Jerkily,

Dave Lacey
