Since it's the auto manufacturers making the recommendations then I
would expect them to recommend longer rather than shorter intervals
between oil changes if commercialism was the only consideration.  After
all, they're trying to sell more cars not more oil.

Actually I'm pretty sure my Chevy manual recommends 6k between oil
changes.  I think 3k intervals is the "common wisdom" recommendation of
car gurus rather than Detroit.
