SU built its last production car carburettor last Monday and delivered
it to Rover Cars for use in a Metro. Subsequent Metro's will have fuel
injection in order to meet the tighter emission standards of the
future. From now on all carburettor production will be for use in the
replacement market.
30 years ago SU was a byword for British technology and twin SU's were a
symbol of high performance. (??) :*) SU dates back to 1905; they were
bought by Morris on 1926 and became part of BLMC and then Rover. At
their peak (1960's) SU built 30,000 carb a week; today carbs are less
than 10% of their production. They're currently owned by the Echlin
Group of the US.
