If the head has been milled, you need to add shims under the cam towers
to compensate. I know Stan Chernoff sells various thicknesses of
shims. Check the head thickness (just use a good steel machinist's
rule for a pretty close idea). Gordon Glasgow reports standard head height
to be 4.528-4.530 and shims necessary if milling over .030 (note that
1/32 of an inch is .03125, so you don't need fancy tools to get a pretty
good idea).
Look closely at the camshaft gear. The teeth should NOT come up to a
point; rather there's a bit of a 'flat spot' at the tip. This may help you
determine if these parts were replaced. Chains and gears are a chunk
of change - in the $600 range (without guides!) so it's possible that
they were 'overlooked'. I have a new set you can look at for
comparison, if you want to drop by.
