If you have a carbonization problem,
        you really do need to pull the head.  Just cleaning up the exhaust
ports won't do much- and as was already said, you really do run the
chance of getting something into a cylinder that could cause harm...like
one of those little wires from the wire wheel!  Also, if there's
significant carbon on the head, no doubt the top of the piston will be
needing attention, too...
        Always practice save decarbonizing <grin>
