SRL311 5 spd

I've been driving my 311 on and off for some time now and can't really 
remember what the tranmission should feel like.  Comparing it to modern cars 
-- it feels extremely loose, even sloppy.  How tight should the 'feel' be 
when shifting?  Is it common to grind ;>[ first gear occassionally when 
downshifting (maybe I'm traveling too fast)?
