The main problem with almost all Nissan engines
is that they are engineered to have the exhaust
on the left side. With turbocharger added there's
not enough space. This could be that Japanese
market cars are RHD and that seems to be the
first explanation but when installed sideways in
a FWD car, the ideal exhaust manifold position is
forward and the gearbox to the left. Many Toyota
and Mazda engines used to have the exhaust to
the right in RWD cars but have more or less joined
the others in having the exhaust on the other side.
This to make it easier for FWD installations.
The only engines I know that have the exhaust to
the right are BMW, Mercedes, Peugeot, Volvo and
some VW/Audi. There are more but these are the
inline engines I can remember now.
Basically, if you want a turbocharged inline 4-cylinder
there are very few that dont have the turbo on the
left side.
Has anyone used a BMW engine in a Roadster?
They are as cheap here as Detroit motors in USA.
