question on transmission fluid level

Hi all,
  Today I  changed the tranny fluid on my 69 2000.  My question is should the 
tranny fluid level be filled to the bottom of the fill hole?  My old book 
says to use 5.5pints or 2.6 L.  I could not get that much into the tranny 
before it started leaking out the fill hole.
