That is true, and the single belt will hold you when you hit an unmoveable
object
at about 40 MPH head on. I have proved that. I did that once in a 68 2L after
being hit by another car and running into a curb about 18" high. I walked away
from the car.
I am not sure which year you are working on, but 68 to 70 models at least came
with shoulder harness belts attached to these mounts, which are just above the
shelf pan and just few inches ahead of the trunk separator.
I am planning double shoulder harness belts attached to a horizontal bar on the
roll bar so I don't damage my chest cartilage again. After all these years
(1969)
I can still make my chest hurt and I would not like to hit it a second time
with a
single shoulder harness.
I just removed the seats from my car to install Miata seats. I was surprised by
the small diameter washers used to back up the floor pan at the 4 mounting
bolts.
The seats stayed in my 68, so I guess they are sufficient. I suppose it is more
important to plan for a hard rear end and make sure the front of the seat stays
put and does not tear out as you are forced into the seat back.
