Thanks for all the replies, 

It looks like I have 4 options.
1) Keep twisting, it should just fit at the magic angle.
2) Loosen the frame bolts and increase the clearance
     temporarily to let it pass.
3) Cut out the triangular piece that the starter is currently
    resting against. 
4) Pull the engine? or at least loosen the mounts to let
    the engine be rocked enough to open up a path.

3) would be the best way if the new starter is the
   bigger 2000 unit, it would open up a nice working
   area.  
I was starting out on a variation on 2), which is why there
is a jack stand under the body on the right. Several
people pointed out that is not safe as a support
point.  There is another jack stand under the frame
out of the picture.
I will have another go at finding the magic angle,
then I'll attack that triangular piece.
